Tips for preparing and storing your items

  • Use quality boxes and always pack them completely, so they don’t collapse when stacked.

  • Use the right size box for your items. For example, pack heavier items in smaller boxes. This makes them much easier to move.

  • Store clothes in wardrobe boxes, so you can store them hanging.

  • Label your boxes on top and sides so you can easily identify what you’re looking for.

  • Consider using shelving to maximize your storage space. See our shelving rental/purchase program.

  • Be careful not to store anything combustible (such as paint and chemicals) or perishable (such as food that is not permanently sealed).

  • When storing lawn and garden equipment, drain any fluids prior to storage in order to avoid corrosive damage.

  • Clean all appliances thoroughly before storing them.

  • Clean furniture, boxes and appliances of all food and perishables.

  • Store small items like pots and pans in large appliances, such as stoves or refrigerators.

  • Store heavy, large items on the bottom, and fill in the rest of the space with boxes.

  • Pack books flat to protect their spines. Do not place boxes directly on concrete floors, but use pallets or skids to prevent moisture absorption.

  • Leave an open aisle in the space so you can easily get to items stored in the back of the unit.

  • Clean rugs and draperies before storing.

  • Cover mattresses and store them flat on level surfaces.

  • Break down items (such as table legs) and store large furniture (like tabletops and sofas) on end to save space.

  • Store furniture carefully on boards or pallets.

  • Use protective covers and treat wood surfaces before storing.

  • Use trash cans to store shovels, hoes and rakes.

  • Use either Kraft paper or bubble wrap for packing items like dishes and glasses.

  • Consider using 100% cotton sheets to cover your items – especially furniture – to protect them from dust or lint.

  • Don’t forget to take out trinkets like perfume bottles from dressers. Their contents can ruin the furniture’s finish.

  • When storing business files label all boxes and construct aisles so files are easily seen and accessible.
